Amtrak train hits SUV stopped on tracks in Orange County

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO — An Amtrak train has slammed into a vehicle that stopped on the tracks in southern Orange County, killing the driver of the SUV.

Sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino says the Toyota RAV4 drove into the path of the southbound train in San Juan Capistrano at about 11 a.m.

He says the train pushed the SUV about 800 feet down the tracks. Crews had to cut the driver's body out of the vehicle.

One train passenger complained of neck and back pain.

Amormino says the incident is being handled as a traffic accident, and an accident reconstruction team is investigating.
