LA-based company owner pleads guilty to Medicare fraud

The owner of a Los Angeles medical equipment company has pleaded guilty to making nearly half a million dollars in false claims to Medicare.

Federal prosecutors say Sylvester Ijewere, owner of Maydads Medical Supply, pleaded guilty Monday to one count of health care fraud in Los Angeles federal court.

Prosecutors say the 49-year-old admitted to scheming to purchase fraudulent prescriptions and medical documents to submit false claims to Medicare for pricey power wheelchairs and other equipment.

A call to Maydads could not be placed because the listed number was disconnected.

Ijewere faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 16.
