A German shepherd left tied to a tree and starved for weeks was recovering today at a veterinary hospital in Garden Grove but still too weak to walk.
The dog, nicknamed "Courage," had only dirt and rocks to eat and weighed 37 pounds – less than half its normal weight – when a woman brought him to rescuers last week, KTLA-TV Channel 5 reported Tuesday night.
"A woman came up to me and asked me why I was sitting there with a dead dog, because he looked like he was dead," an emotional Shawn Hollub of German Shepherd Rescue of Orange County told the station.
X-rays showed the dog had dirt and rocks in his intestines, William Grant II of Community Veterinary Hospital in Garden Grove told KTLA.
"The only thing he had to eat was dirt," Grant told KTLA.
A $1,000 reward was offered for information leading to whoever was responsible for leaving Courage to starve, KTLA reported.
