LA federal lockup inmate fight leaves 4 guards injured

A fight among inmates at the federal lockup in downtown Los Angeles ended with four prison guards hurt, authorities said today.

The fight in the Metropolitan Detention Center at Alameda and Aliso streets started among about 10 inmates around 7:10 p.m., and Los Angeles police surrounded the building and sealed off streets.

Four prison guards were hurt in putting down the disturbance, and two were taken to hospitals to be checked out, according to Steve Gagliardi, a case management coordinator at the federal jail. He said he did not believe anyone was seriously hurt.

There were 1,011 people being held in the federal detention center as of today.
