Suspected child molester shot by officer in Laguna Niguel

A suspected child molester wanted on a $1 million warrant was shot and wounded today in Laguna Niguel, officials said.

The shooting occurred at 9:50 a.m. near Rancho Niguel Road and Via Lido, said Jim Amormino of the Orange County Sheriff's Department.

A task force of officers from the Brea and Anaheim police departments were searching an apartment building for the suspected child molester, who ran from the building to a nearby jogging path where he was shot, Amormino said.

It was unclear if the suspect was armed, Amormino said.

The 44-year-old man was being treated at a hospital. His condition was unknown, said Amormino.

A nearby elementary school was locked down for a time.
