Retired sportscaster Keith Jackson will receive an honorary doctorate of humane letters from Whittier College today at its 107th commencement ceremony.
Jackson's tie to the college is that his daughter Melanie is its artist-in-residence and faculty member in voice.
In addition to his legendary college football announcing for ABC, Jackson was also the first play-by-play announcer on "Monday Night Football," and announced NBA basketball and Major League Baseball games for the network.
Novelist Tim O'Brien will give the commencement's keynote address and also receive an honorary doctorate of humane letters. All students entering Whittier College in 2006, the class that will be graduating Friday, read O'Brien's collection of stories about a platoon of American soldiers in the Vietnam War, "The Things They Carried."
About 340 undergraduate and graduate students will receive degrees.
