Civilians and veterans came to the Los Angeles National Cemetery in Westwood to pay tribute to the men and women who lost their lives in combat.

Nicole Cagle brought flowers to honor her brother Daniel. He was a member of the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division; the 22-year-old soldier died three years ago in Iraq. Nicole and childhood friend Erin Gerety smiled when they talked about him.

“We try not to remember all those bad memories,” said Cagle. “We try to remember all the humor and good times we’ve always had. He was definitely a character and we all remember that.”

“He loved music and the guitar and Jimi Hendrix and Sublime,” added Gerety. “You could always depend on him to light up a room. He was very dependable as a friend, a brother, son. Whenever you needed him, he was there."

The commemoration at the L.A. National Cemetery marked the 121st year of the annual Memorial Day program.
