COMPTON — The defunct Compton Police Department may be making a comeback after being disbanded under a cloud of corruption and politics.
City Councilwoman Yvonne Arceneaux says the City Council is set to vote Tuesday night to start the process of forming a local police force.
Compton has seen declining crime rates since 2000 when the Police Department was disbanded and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department took over. The city recorded 55 homicides in 1999 and 37 last year.
The City Council last year set aside $20 million for startup costs for a new police department and recently held four town hall meetings to gauge community sentiment on the issue.
