Community leaders will celebrate the grand opening of a Fresh & Easy supermarket in South Los Angeles Monday.
The supermarket at the corner of Adams Street and Central Avenue has already sparked increased economic activity in the neighborhood.
The Fresh & Easy occupies the bottom floor of a new mixed-use complex that includes apartment space on two upper floors, and rental space for other storefront retail along the street.
"I think it's going to change people's perceptions of their neighborhoods from north to south,'' said City Councilwoman Jan Perry, who worked hard to score the development deal.
She told the Downtown News that the new Fresh & Easy will lure residents from the newly-trendy lofts in the downtown area into the historic Central Avenue core.
It replaces an antiquated 1960s-style market and huge parking lot at the site, which was formerly occupied by Vons, then after the 1994 riots by an independent grocer called Jons. The Adams/Central location is the first Fresh & Easy store in a broad swath of the Los Angeles area south of Hollywood Boulevard and north of the 105 Freeway.
