A series of eight fires near Cal State Northridge are believed to have been set by an arsonist, a fire official said today.
The fires were all set between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. Thursday between Plummer and Devonshire streets and Corbin and White Oak avenues, said Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.
"The fires ... primarily consisted of rubbish or small vegetation,'' Humphrey said.
He said four similar fires occurred in the same area during April, but those were initially considered "a random spree of arson.''
Those fires are now believed to have been set by the same arsonist. The fires are being investigated by the LAFD Arson/Counter-Terrorism Section in conjunction with the LAPD Devonshire station.
Authorities urged residents to watch for suspicious activity, get rid of dry brush and trash, use outdoor lighting, lock vehicles and put garbage in covered trash cans.
Anyone with information on the fires was asked to call the city fire department at (213) 485-6095.
