Los Angeles County is looking into the paychecks of City Council members in the small city of Bell - who make nearly $100,000 a year for part-time work.
The Los Angeles County district attorney's office said Wednesday that it's reviewing why records show council members receiving more than $8,000 a month to serve a town with only 40,000 residents.
State law says part-time council members in small cities should get about $400 a month.
The records indicate that the council members were paid $150 a month for the council but earn thousands more for serving on what appear to be various housing, finance and redevelopment agencies.
But Bell Vice Mayor Teresa Jacobo says the figures are misleading because the monthly bill includes the cost of medical insurance, retirement and other benefits.
