Sunland freeway fire slows early morning commute; cause under investigation

A debris fire off the eastbound Foothill (210) Freeway slowed traffic passing through the Sunland area during the early morning Monday commute, but no injuries were reported, authorities said.

Just after 5:30 a.m., motorists reported smoke emanating from underneath the eastbound lanes of the freeway near the Tujunga Wash. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire around 9:43 a.m., Brian Humphrey, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

“We still have no clarification on what debris was burning,” Humphrey said. The fire was in a confined area below the freeway. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
