A week-long wave of "fan girls" has flooded the nation's box office with vampire romance lovers, and "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" was predicted today to gross $175.3 million in domestic sales since opening last Wednesday.
The movie from Summit packed in teenaged girls for an estimated $82.5 million haul over the four-day holiday weekend, Hollywood.com's Paul Dergarabedian said.
"Eclipse" sold $30 million in midnight showings earlier in the week, he said.
"The Last Airbender" opened with a strong second place showing, despite poor reviews, Dergarabedian said. The Paramount movie opened with an estimated $53.2 million in ticket sales over the four-day weekend period, and a total of $70.5 million since opening Thursday.
"Toy Story 3" crossed the $300 million benchmark in its third week of
showing by Pixar/Disney. It is on track for a $42.2 million weekend and has amassed $301 million and change in domestic sales, the Hollywood.com analyst said.
"Grown Ups" is in fourth place, with an estimated $26.5 million in sales this weekend, and a two-week run of $85 million for Sony/Columbia.
And in fifth place is "Knight & Day," with a projected weekend take of $14 million for Fox, and a two-week total of $49.3 million.
