The lone marine mammal care center in Los Angeles County is overcrowded with little nearby backup.
Marine Animal Rescue spokesman Peter Wallerstein says the El Segundo group has gotten land from the state and approval from the federal government to design, build and operate a second center at Dockweiler Beach in Playa del Rey. He says they have to work out the funding and get approval from the state Coastal Commission, so the new center could still be a year or two away.
Wallerstein says permission came from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Marine Fisheries Service, while California State Parks supplied the land.
