Memorial services are pending for California Republican State Senator Dave Cox. The 72-year-old lawmaker died today of prostate cancer.
Voters first sent Republican Senator Dave Cox to the state Assembly a dozen years ago. They re-elected the fiscal conservative to two more Assembly terms. Cox won his state Senate seat in 2004, and started his second term in 2008.
He represented all or part of 12 Northern California counties - including several rural ones - and Sacramento. Throughout all this, his family said, Cox battled the prostate cancer that eventually killed him.
Before he entered the legislature, Cox spent six years on the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors; he also was a former chairman of Sacramento’s public television station.
Colleagues from his political life praised Cox as a legendary public servant and a willing mentor to younger lawmakers.
