VENICE — Authorities say a man has drowned in the surf at Venice Beach.
Los Angeles County Lifeguard Chief Mickey Gallagher says the victim, a middle-aged man, was fishing near the Venice breakwater late Saturday night when he decided to have a quick swim.
The man got caught up in the swift currents and immediately yelled for help, but witnesses say they couldn't see him in the dark.
A lifeguard crew located the unresponsive victim floating near rocks a half hour later. He was pronounced dead at a hospital. The victim has not been identified.
A 31-year-old man drowned July 5 after jumping off the Venice Pier. The body of Brian Patrick Dunn was recovered July 11 a few miles to the north in Santa Monica.
