Chula Vista assemblywoman Mary Salas called off a manual recount that showed her still trailing former Assemblyman Juan Vargas in the Democratic primary.
California Assemblywoman Mary Salas has called off the recount she requested in the 40th Senate District after three days of counting failed to turn the tide in her favor.
Elections officials in San Diego and Riverside counties said Thursday that the Chula Vista lawmaker called off the manual recount Wednesday night.
The official tally certified by the Secretary of State's office on July 16 had Salas trailing former Assemblyman Juan Vargas by 22 votes for the Democratic nomination.
By the end of the day Wednesday, Vargas had gained four additional votes, while Salas had lost 10. The district also includes all of Imperial County, but Salas did not request a recount there.
Vargas will be the favorite in November because Democrats hold a 16-point registration advantage.
