A fire at a tire and muffler shop in East Los Angeles has left two people dead and two critically burned.
Fire spokesman Devin Gales says crews found smoke and flames pouring from the building shortly after 6:30 a.m. Monday. It took more than an hour to douse the blaze.
Gales says 124 firefighters had to surround the building rather than go inside because tires on the roof contributed to the danger.
Capt. Jaime Moore says some people delayed calling 911 while they tried to fight the blaze with a garden hose.
Gales says two bodies were found in the building and two men outside were hospitalized. Gales says a 61-year-old man had first- and second-degree burns over 40 percent of his body and the second man had upper-body burns.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
