Mario Sanchez, a resident of the City of Bell, holds a protest placard calling for the ouster of city officials before the start of a council meeting on July 26, 2010 in Bell, California.

The Bell city attorney who served as legal counsel when the City Council approved huge salaries for its leaders has resigned as city attorney for the neighboring city of Maywood.

Edward Lee's announcement Monday comes less than a week after he also resigned his city attorney post at nearby Downey.

Lee and other Bell officials took over management of Maywood services after the troubled Los Angeles suburb fired its police force and most employees.

Maywood's interim city manager, Angela Spaccia, resigned her post at Bell last month after revelations that she earned more than $376,000 a year. She announced Friday that she intended to resign from Maywood but the mayor says her work won't end until her contract expires next week.
