SAN FRANCISCO -- A San Francisco lawyer and former federal prosecutor has been confirmed as the new U.S. Attorney in Northern California.
The Senate on Thursday unanimously approved the nomination of Melinda Haag to replace Joseph Russoniello, who has run the office for three years.
The Northern District of California covers the state's northern coast down to the Monterey area and east nearly to Sacramento.
Haag graduated from the University of California, Berkeley law school. She worked as a federal prosecutor in Los Angeles from 1989 to 1993 and in San Francisco from 1999 to 2003.
Since 2003, she has been a partner at the international law firm Orrick, Herrington and Sutcliffe, where she has represented executives of major corporations.
Haag will be the first woman to lead the district in 90 years.
