Calif. senators to investigate gas line explosion

SACRAMENTO — Two state senators are planning a senate investigation and a public hearing into the cause of a natural gas line explosion that killed four people in suburban San Francisco.

Democratic Sens. Mark Leno of San Francisco and Alex Padilla of Los Angeles said Friday that they will examine how to prevent similar tragedies.

Leno is chairman of the Senate Public Safety Committee, and Padilla is chairman of the Senate Energy, Utilities and Communications Committee.

Leno says senators will work with the National Transportation Safety Board, the lead federal agency investigating the explosion that destroyed dozens of homes in San Bruno on Thursday night.

The lawmakers say their investigation will begin immediately. They plan to schedule one or more hearings in the coming weeks.
