They didn’t sell many tickets for movies this weekend. The numbers were comparatively sluggish.

This was the lowest grossing weekend of the year at the box office. Hollywood traditionally takes a pass as football season charges forward. Studio officials say the opening of the NFL can keep the box office numbers down.

The latest installment of the 3D horror flick “Resident Evil” ended up on top. And it was the only new release movie studios put out this weekend. It brought about $28 million.

‘Takers’ is second with $6 million. And George Clooney’s ‘The American’ is right behind with about $6 million as well.

Studios are hoping for a change of pace next weekend, as the fall movie season officially begins.
