Los Angeles officials announced today a $47.5 million federal grant will allow the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to build a facility near Union Station where 200 passenger buses can be serviced.

The money came from the U.S. Department of Transportation, through the Federal Transit Administration's State of Good Repair Bus Initiative.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe, who chairs the Metro board, said the funds would "go along way toward maintaining Metro's transportation system.''

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa called it a "win-win for mobility.''

Metro plans to construct a three-story state-of-the-art bus operations and maintenance facility that can accommodate up to 200 compressed natural gas buses.

The facility would also include a 16,300-square-foot bus operations administration building and 500,000-square-foot bus maintenance building.

The city is expected to solicit bids from contractors in January, with a goal of beginning construction next June and completing the facility by spring 2013.
