BELL — The police union in Bell is demanding to know why the Los Angeles suburb's disgraced former manager gave a police commander a $10,000-a-month raise last year.
At a news conference Thursday, Union President Gilbert Jara (HAHR'-uh) displayed copies of a memo he says came from ousted City Administrator Robert Rizzo approving the raise.
Rizzo and seven other current and former Bell officials have been charged with misappropriating $5.5 million in public funds.
In the June 2009 memo, Rizzo says that the recipient, Lt. Ty Henshaw, is the only member of the police force he can trust.
The union says Henshaw should be suspended and investigated by the city.
A police records clerk says Henshaw is in a meeting Thursday and not immediately available for comment.
