Skiers take advantage of well-lit slopes through the night at Mountain High ski resort, January 24, 2001 near Wrightwood, CA.
One of Southern California’s ski resorts opened for the season Thursday. Mountain High in Wrightwood is the first local ski resort to open this ski season.
Mountain High has had that record of being the first to open for more than a dozen years now.
It was able to open because the chilly weather we’ve had this week allowed it to turn on its snow makers and cover the mountain with white.
Bear Mountain and Snow Summit in Big Bear and Snow Valley near Lake Arrowhead still haven’t opened. But all of them report they’re making snow. They hope to be up and running by the Thanksgiving holiday.
Mammoth Mountain in Northern California also opened this week. A storm dumped 1 to 3 feet of snow up there this past weekend, adding to the man-made snow.
