About 20 people were waiting at the doors of the Santa Monica Sears when they opened at 7 a.m. on Thanksgiving morning.

Some retailers are beginning the holiday shopping season early by opening today. KPCC's Brian Watt joins us live from the Sears in Santa Monica.

People were at Sears early this morning. About two dozen people were waiting in line when the door opened.

It wasn't a mob scene, but there were plenty of people, and the parking is filling up slowly.

This is a first for Sears, opening from 7 a.m. to noon on Thanksgiving day. Wal-Mart, Toys "R" Us and K-Mart stores are also opening some today, trying to play their role in speeding up an economic recovery.

A lot of the folks in line at Sears were shopping for appliances. Two young brothers from Lennox, California came to Sears to buy a PlayStation 3. They got it and left with smiles on their faces.

One woman came in shopping for winter coats for her grandson on this chilly Thanksgiving day.
