California’s two newest members of Congress were sworn in Wednesday. Both are veterans of Sacramento.
Republican Jeff Denham of Fresno joined Los Angeles Democrat Karen Bass taking the oath of office from the new US House Speaker John Boehner.
Both lawmakers arrive in Washington from the state legislature in Sacramento, where they dealt firsthand with California’s budget crisis.
Has Congresswoman Bass – the former Assembly Speaker - gotten a call from the new Governor Jerry Brown?
"No, not yet, my goodness!" she laughs. "However, having just left Sacramento, I feel pretty comfortable about what they’re gonna ask. So actually, I’m already making those asks ahead of time."
Bass will probably have to tell the state not to expect much help from Washington. She’s in the minority party, and the Republican majority has made cost cutting a top priority in the new Congress.
