A 17-year-old boy has made his first court appearance stemming from the wounding of two classmates when a gun he allegedly brought to a Los Angeles school went off in his backpack.
The Gardena High School student appeared Friday in Long Beach Superior Court on charges of bringing a firearm into a school zone and discharging it.
District attorney's spokeswoman Jane Robison says he didn't enter a plea. He'll be held in juvenile custody until next month, when a date will be set to determine whether he should be tried as an adult.
The youth could get seven years behind bars if convicted as an adult, versus nine months as a juvenile.
A call to his lawyer, Jack Fuller, wasn't immediately returned.
Authorities say the gun went off when the boy reached into his backpack on Tuesday. One victim remains hospitalized.
