Staffer in mayor's office arrested for alleged attack on officer

A staffer in Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's gang-reduction office and her husband have been arrested on suspicion of attacking police officers during a scuffle at a Los Angeles nightclub.

Los Angeles police Lt. Jim Gavin says Blanca Martinez-Navarro, the Rampart program manager for the major's gang reduction and youth development office, was booked early Sunday for battery on a peace officer. Similar charges were filed against her husband, Oscar Navarro.

Gavin says police received a call about a domestic disturbance at the downtown club the Congo Room. When officers arrived, Gavin says, they were attacked by the husband.

While they were taking him into custody Martinez-Navarro allegedly jumped on the back of one of the officers and began hitting him.

Both are held in lieu of $20,000 bail.

A call to the mayor's office for comment was not immediately returned Sunday.
