Many Angelenos who couldn’t make it to Washington this month when new members of Congress took the oath of office have a second chance to bear witness. The U.S. House Minority Leader is in Los Angeles to swear in California's newest Democratic member of Congress.
It’s organized chaos in the Capitol when new members take the oath at the beginning of a new session of Congress. Usually, only family members and friends witness the biannual ceremony in the stately Rayburn Room. But today, the ceremony comes to L.A.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi is in town for a do-over: she’s repeating the swearing-in for Karen Bass of Los Angeles. The ceremony will be held on the site of what used to be the Ambassador Hotel – the Robert F. Kennedy Community Schools Auditorium.
The woman Bass replaced, retired Congresswoman Diane Watson, plans to be there, too. Also attending: Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Bass’ longtime political compadre Senate President pro Tem Darrell Steinberg.
The ceremony begins promptly at 2:30. More than 700 people have reserved seats at the event.
