Today is the last day to register to vote in next month’s special election in San Clemente. The city ballot features only one measure.
It’s about the most contentious issue there is in the south Orange County beach town: development.
Measure A would allow the San Clemente City Council to move forward with a plan for a development in the city’s rundown North Beach area.
The Playa del Norte development would replace a public parking lot with shops, restaurants and office space.
Supporters say it would revive an area that’s run down. And they say about 40 percent of the project also maintains open space.
But opponents say it takes away beach parking without doing anything about other blighted lots and businesses in the area.
Opponents claim the city’s plan for the North Beach area will turn over public land to a private developer at a fraction of its value.
San Clemente voters will decide one way or another in a March 8 special election.
