Tennis star Serena Williams is recovering in a Los Angeles hospital following emergency treatment for a pulmonary embolism.

According to Williams’ spokeswoman, doctors at Cedars-Sinai discovered the blood clot in her lungs when she returned to L.A. from New York for appointments to treat ongoing issues with her right foot.

The tennis champ who trained on public courts in Compton hasn’t played an official match since winning Wimbledon last summer – for the fourth time. Shortly after that, she accidentally stepped on broken glass, and cut herself. Since then, she’s had two surgeries on her foot.

The injury kept her from defending her title two months ago at the Australian Open.

Williams’ spokeswoman said doctors continue to monitor her situation closely to avoid more complications.
