The solar powered Ferris wheel at the Pacific Park amusement park on the Santa Monica Pier will turn out the lights tonight in honor of Earth Hour 2011.

The world's most famous solar-powered Ferris wheel will go dark for an hour Saturday night to publicize Earth Hour 2011, its operator said.

The energy-saving LED lights will be doused from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. as part of the worldwide publicity campaign for action against global warming and climate change, organized by the World Wildlife Fund.

Cities around the world are going dark from 8:30-9:30 p.m. in their local time zones as part of the campaign.

The Santa Monica Pier's Pacific Park has installed 160,000 LED lights on its wheel, and uses solar power to run the machinery during daylight hours.

During tonight's observance, the only lights left on will be safety lights on the wheel's rim, said park spokesman Cameron Andrews.
