Even as the heat drives people to Orange County’s beaches, they won’t be able to go swimming along one stretch of Newport Beach. That's because health officials closed down the beach near Ruby's Diner Tuesday morning.

The restaurant sits at the end of Balboa Pier.

It has a big holding tank for sewage. A line connected to the holding tank broke, spilling about 500 gallons of raw sewage into the water.

The Orange County Health Care Agency closed the stretch of beach nearby, about 1,000 feet in each direction from Balboa Pier.

That means no swimming, surfing or diving until the restaurant can get the sewage line fixed.
