More than 810,000 air travelers are expected to pass through Los Angeles International Airport, the nation's third busiest, during the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

Los Angeles World Airports says in a news release that the expected 810,652 travelers is a 5.4 percent increase over last year's four-day holiday period. Friday and Monday are the busiest holiday period travel days.

The increase is due to new flights to overseas destinations, a recovering national economy and additional flights.

During the summer travel season beginning Friday through Labor Day, airport officials estimate nearly 18 million passengers will pass through Los Angeles International Airport, an increase of 5.7 percent over last year.
