Bakersfield worker killed during oil rig construction

An oil field worker was killed Monday evening when a support beam collapsed during construction of a new drilling rig in Ventura County.

According to the Ventura County Star, Oscar Zamudio, 34, was pinned between the rig and beam when he was working in the hills near West Fork Hall Canyon Road and Manuel Canyon Road northeast of Ventura.

Investigators say the Zamudio climbed up the rig to help two coworkers who were removing a large hinge pin while erecting a new oil drilling rig when the beam collapsed.

The California Occupational Safety and Health Administration officials are investigating the incident.
