La Mirada's Los Coyotes Middle School was put on lockdown after a man living next to the campus barricaded himself inside his suburban home.

The L.A. County Sheriff's Department responded after a neighbor heard a gunshot around 7:30 a.m., according to Sgt. Greg Arnold of the Norwalk station.

Arnold reported that the man has registered firearms at the residence, and is believed to have suicidal tendencies. Police surrounded the home and tried coaxing the man out, which is why the school was placed on lockdown, he said.

The man has so far ignored police requests to surface.
