Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa says his 10-day trade mission to Asia was a success.

The mayor said he traveled to Asia as L.A.’s salesman-in-chief. "We’re going to knock on doors like a salesman would, wherever we need to knock to get the business that we need."

On this trip, those doors were in China, Japan and South Korea — just weeks after the last country on that list ratified a free trade agreement with the United States.

Kathryn McDermott, who heads business development for the Port of Los Angeles, traveled with the mayor. She brought home an agreement with shipping conglomerate Hyundai Merchant Marine to build a new terminal at the Port.

"The M.O.U., or memorandum of understanding with Hyundai, will create thousands of jobs both in the construction and then in the operation of the terminal," McDermott said.

Hundreds more jobs could develop from another deal announced during the trip. L.A.-based Ikonic Entertainment plans to design two theme parks in China.
