A 1,500-gallon sewage spill has forced health officials to close San Diego County beaches near the San Elijo Lagoon.

San Diego County health officials have closed beaches near San Elijo Lagoon following a 1,500-gallon sewage spill discovered Wednesday morning.

Warning signs posted north and south of the lagoon will remain in place until tests show the water is safe, according to County spokesman Tom Lambert.

A rupture at the lagoon's Encinitas pump station is being blamed for the foul finding.
