US Archbishop of San Francisco George Hugh Niederauer (R) receives the Pallum from Pope Benedict XVI in St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican 29 June 2006, during a mass for the celebration of feast for the apostles Peter and Paul, patrons of the church.

Archbishop George Niederauer spoke against the federal Secure Communities program at an interfaith gathering in San Francisco on Saturday afternoon, saying the program was tearing immigrant families apart.

Niederauer has called on California's governor and attorney general to do something about it.

Critics say the program has ensnared people with no prior criminal convictions or those arrested for routine traffic and permit violations. ICE says it prioritizes the removal of illegal immigrants who pose the greatest threat to public safety and those who have repeatedly violated immigration laws.
