South LA mother arrested for death of 1-year-old daughter and attempted murder of another

A South Los Angeles mother was arrested Wednesday after her alleged attempt to drown her two daughters left the 1-year-old girl dead and the 5-year-old in critical condition, police said.

Lorna Valle, 32, has been booked for murder and is being held on $1.5 million bail, according to an LAPD release.

Authorities responded to a 911 call at 7:27 a.m. Wednesday at the converted garage home on the 900 block of West 50th Street. Firefighters found the two girls unresponsive and both were transported to the hospital where Lindsay Taque, 1, was pronounced dead after doctors worked for two hours to revive her, according to the LAPD.

Police believe Valle's husband found her trying to drown the girls and stopped her, and then called 911, said LAPD Cmdr. Andrew Smith. Detectives with the LAPD's Abused Child Unit are trying to determine why Valle was trying to drown her children.
