Los Angeles police say a woman in her mid-20s abducted off a street has died of injuries suffered when the suspected kidnapper's SUV crashed head-on into another car as police were in pursuit in the Westlake area.

Cmdr. Andrew Smith tells KABC-TV that a bystander called for help when the woman was grabbed west of downtown shortly after 8 a.m. Thursday. Officers went to the area, spotted a vehicle matching the description and saw a woman inside waving her arms to get their attention, according to Smith.

Police chased the vehicle for about a mile. Smith says the victim was leaning out the window of the SUV, a GMC Yukon, during the chase.

The suspect made a U-turn and drove on the wrong side of the street, going west in eastbound lanes, Smith said. It ended when the vehicle smashed into a Volvo.

The SUV driver tried to run off but was captured. Smith says the Volvo driver has minor injuries and was taken to a hospital. The woman subsequently died at a hospital.

The police spokesman says the motive for the abduction is not yet known. No names have been released, with the victim's name withheld pending notification of relatives.
