Today is Wednesday, April 25, 2012, and here is what's happening in Los Angeles:

Headlines

  • Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa called into "On Air with Ryan Seacrest" to talk about Denim Day, which is intended to raise awareness of sexualized violence.

  • The New York Times takes a look at how the population of South Los Angeles has shifted from mostly black to mostly Latino. "This is a huge, pivotal shift, as important as any other population change or migration we’ve had in the city," Raphael J. Sonenshein, the executive director at the Pat Brown Institute at Cal State LA, told the paper.

  • Los Angeles police officers who are disciplined with warnings instead of suspensions are less likely to recommit the same offense, the Los Angeles Times reports. "I know it can be like biting a lemon knowing someone is getting a reprimand instead of a suspension. But so far it is working," Deputy Chief Mark Perez told the Police Commission.

  • The Department of Water and Power will conduct an energy efficiency audit of the Los Angeles Unified School District to see if it can cut the school system's $90 million power bill, according to the Daily News. "I have been very frustrated with the fact that LAUSD is in the wrong (billing) category, and the district is the largest consumer of water and power in L.A. and DWP isn't interested in looking for a fairer way to bill the district," school board member Tamar Galatzan told the newspaper.
