Bishop J. Jon Bruno greets a member of the congregation at the Peace.
The bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles announced through a letter to the faithful that he's been diagnosed with leukemia.
L.A. Episcopalian Bishop J. Jon Bruno thought he had a “nagging” bout of pneumonia. But in a letter to parishioners, he said his doctors diagnosed him as having Acute Monocytic Leuekemia.
“The doctors are of a mind that we can beat this," said Bruno in the letter, "but I want to be honest with you: I am frightened.”
Bruno said he is now undergoing aggressive treatment for the cancer, a process that typically involves a combination of chemotherapy, drugs, nutritional support and sometimes blood transfusions.
Bruno asked parishioners for their prayers and to remain positive. The bishop said that he will continue to serve as bishop of the six-county Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles — with help from other local bishops.
