Orange County commuters are getting more space to park their cars so they can hop on trains or buses. The continued expansion is there to hopefully reduce the county's freeway congestion.

The Fullerton Transportation Center gets 814 new parking spaces to serve commuters using Amtrak, Metrolink and Orange County buses. The center currently has more than 1,300 parking spaces.

The Orange County Transportation Authority says the Fullerton Center is one of the busiest transit centers in the country with more than 850,000 people boarding trains there every year. That number is expected to increase, though, so more parking is needed at the station, where 50 commuter trains stop every day.

The new facility gets all of its electricity from rooftop solar panels.

Metrolink continues expanding and recently added more trains for service between Fullerton and Laguna Niguel and Mission Viejo.

The Transportation Authority plans to add more parking at the train stations in those cities and in Orange.

Last year, the Orange County Transportation Authority opened a parking structure in Tustin. They also opened one in Irvine four years ago.

The new parking structure opens at 5 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.
