The Orange County Fair in Costa Mesa offers plenty of carnival rides through the middle of next month, but a record number of visitors are getting their ride on even before they arrive at the fairgrounds.

Orange County transportation officials say many fairgoers are ditching their cars and using the special OC Fair Express bus service. The trip bypasses parking and traffic hassles, while (the transit agency maintains) saving riders money.

That’s because express bus passengers also get coupons that get them into the fair for $2 — the normal entrance fee is $11.

Transportation officials say 80 percent more riders boarded in the first three days of this year’s fair than during the same spell last year.

The OC Fair Express provides non-stop direct service from eight park-and-ride lots to the OC Fair through August 12. The roundtrip fare costs $3.
