Long Beach police are in pursuit of a suspected robber after killing his accomplice and wounding another.

Sgt. Aaron Eaton says blocks of the city have been cordoned off as dogs, a helicopter and a SWAT team help search.

Eaton says three robbers armed with at least one handgun took over a Rite Aid store at around 1 a.m. Wednesday. They also robbed a woman in a parking lot before fleeing.

Arriving officers saw a car speeding off and chased it. As the officers chased the suspects' vehicle, they believed they were being shot at, Long Beach Police Chief Jim McDonnell said according to a local wire service, adding that bullet casings recovered by investigators appear to bear out the officers' account.

The chase ended with a confrontation with police during which one man was shot dead at the scene and the second was wounded. He's hospitalized in unknown condition.
