Garden Grove woman faces kidnapping charges in alleged baby stealing case

Garden Grove Police Department

Grisel Ramirez, 48, arrested for attempting to kidnap a newborn baby girl from Garden Grove Medical Center.

The Orange County District attorney said he’ll charge the woman who allegedly tried to steal a newborn baby from a Garden Grove hospital with kidnapping and five felony counts of first-degree burglary.

Prosecutors said 48-year-old Grisel Ramirez posed as a nurse on Monday and took the baby from the mother's room at Garden Grove Medical Center.

They say she tried to smuggle the baby in a large tote bag.

But an electronic sensor on the infant’s ankle set off an alarm that alerted hospital staff.

The hospital places security bands on infants as soon as they’re born.

Police said Ramirez, who lives in Garden Grove, had faked a pregnancy by her estranged husband and needed a baby to show him after her ‘due date’ had passed.

If a jury convicts her on all the charges, she faces up to 17 years and eight months in prison.
