Los Angeles sheriff's divers searching for a missing 50-year-old diver have retrieved a body from the area where her belongings were found on the beach a week ago, but the body has yet to be identified.
The divers found the body around 11:30 a.m. Saturday along the rocky coastline below the Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes, according to City News Service. It was found about 200 yards off the coast, according to the Times.
Lt. Margarito Robles says the body has not been identified and it remains undetermined whether it is male or female.
Divers were searching for Rebecca Weiss, who left her Marina del Rey home last Saturday morning to go free-diving — diving with a face mask but no scuba gear — near the Terranea Resort and was supposed to be back by 5 p.m. that day.
When she did not arrive, her husband, Alan Weiss, 60, went to the cliffs and found her car and personal items, including some diving equipment. The couple were both experienced divers who had been married for 20 years. Alan Weiss said he had last seen his wife driving away from home wearing a wetsuit — and that the spot where she dived was one of the couple's favorite diving spots.
When her body was found, Weiss' mother Vilma Causey was standing on the beach with other family members, holding a picture of her daughter, according to the Times. An emotional Causey later left with her son after speaking to one of the divers. Both Weiss' mother and sister were seen Saturday sobbing as they left, KNX radio reports.
Sheriff's detectives had wanted to question the husband after four days of fruitless searches, according to the Times, but there has been no released information about possible suspicions of foul play.
