A BMW crashed into a pizzeria in Los Angeles early Sunday morning, killing three people upon impact and triggering a blaze, authorities report.
Sgt. Donald Kelly says the crash happened at about 3:30 a.m. Sunday in Studio City. The three died instantly.
Kelly says the car ran off the road and hit Reno's Pizzeria on Ventura Boulevard. It's not immediately clear what caused the driver to crash.
According to the Los Angeles Times, identification cards recovered from the wreckage show that two of the passengers were male.
"When the car immolates like that, identification and stuff like that are iffy," Sgt. Kurt Smith of the Valley Traffic Division of the Los Angeles Police Department told the L.A. Times.
Friends of the victims told KTLA that the three were heading from a birthday celebration and the driver had been drinking.
The resulting blaze took more than 20 minutes to extinguish.
Studio City is located in the San Fernando Valley. It's about 12 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles.
